Our Team
We have deep, hands-on knowledge of residential construction and execute both interior and exterior work with confidence.
Our specialties include framing for new builds, renovations and shops, exterior finishing, decks / outdoor spaces, and boutique structures such as home offices, studios, and guest houses. We’re especially drawn to unique, one-of-a-kind projects—builds where clean lines, purposeful details, and thoughtful design set that them apart.

Hayden Schmitz
Hayden has been drawn to building and engineering since he was a toddler. While his tools and experience have evolved over the years, his curiosity and passion for construction have remained constant. What began as building bike jumps and backyard features has grown into a lifelong commitment to crafting high-quality structures with details designed to last.
Hayden is deeply interested in building science and structural engineering, and he approaches every project with both technical precision and genuine enthusiasm.
Hayden thrives in team environments and brings steady leadership to each project. He values the relationships built along the way—with his crew, sub-trades, and clients—and believes that strong communication and shared standards are what elevate a project from good to exceptional. Over the course of his career, he continues to build lasting professional relationships grounded in trust, respect, and pride in the work.

Chris Thorogood
Chris brings nearly a decade of experience in the construction industry, specializing in custom homes and renovations. He began his career in Squamish, where he worked on high-end residential projects and developed a strong foundation in quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. In 2019, he relocated to the Kootenays for the love of the mountains and has continued to grow his skills working across a range of residential builds.
With a solid hands-on background, Chris takes pride in executing on-site carpentry with precision and efficiency. He is known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to delivering clean, lasting results. Chris is proud to be part of the Black Fir team and values contributing to projects that reflect the company’s high standards and quality-driven approach.
